Nathan has been reading a lot of books about how people make decisions. So he has started to do surveys on the children to see how they decide. First, he started with three ice cream cones and asked each child separately various possible scenarios. It was interesting to see how different some of the answers were. For example, the older kids picked friends when they were allowed to give away one of the cones, but the younger kids usually kept it within the family. I was excited that four of them would give Mommy the chocolate ice cream!! Wahoo - they know me.
Later in the day, Nathan asked about a scenario of being on a train approaching a fork in the rail. If the train went right it would kill one worker on the rail, but if the train went left it would kill five. Then, the train was approaching a bridge. In this scenario there the person being asked was sitting with someone else on a bridge above the track the train was on. There was a worker on the track that would be killed but Nathan offered the suggestion of saving the worker by pushing the person next to you down in front of the train.
The children talked about their feelings and what they would do when Brooklynn said "Or you could jump yourself and save both people." I was floored. How amazing - I had not even considered that option yet here was my 10 year old offering a sacrifice. Way to go Brooklynn! You are a special girl - very sensitive to others and very in tune with the Spirit!
