Leg 6 - Amazing Race

Leg 6. Here is the first clue that I emailed out for everyone to figure out where to start.

So we all arrived at the farmer’s market area which once was a hotel in Flagler Beach. The next clue was a roadblock – Who has the beat?

For some reason I cannot find this clue so I will just tell you about it. It read – while safely staying on the sidewalk, one team member must dance for one minute along a busy road to entertain the drivers. It ended up being the whole team doing the dancing but frankly only one person per team ended up doing it.

From here they received the next clue…to go to Veteran’s Park.

It was awesome because not only does it contain a lot of historical info it also has a map so the kids had to navigate where to go based on the map.

Then it was game time!

We had played the over and under relay but instead of using water balloons we used a bowl of water. They had the option of using a bowl or balancing a water balloon on their face and covering a certain distance.

This turned out to be more challenging than expected. But we are super flexible so the kids just ate the jello. It is always fun trying things with food! I made jello and put it in small containers the night before and then I totally forgot to take it! But thankfully a friend said “why don’t we just go buy some?” Duh – I had not thought about that – they do sell pre-made jello. So Hailey saved the day!!

Then we bagged the planned games and had some fun. The kids threw water balloons at each other.

I did bring a cooler of water half full to fill up the bowls and the kids had a blast tossing that all over each other.

Unfortunately there was mulch under the swings at the park we were at so we decided not to do it with water balloons. Instead we used a beach ball and the kids tried to throw the ball at others while they were swinging. I am not sure if it was the momentum of swinging or the ocean breeze but that beach ball did not fly in an predictable pattern. It was fun to watch though.

Back to Back Water Balloon Relay Race from

It’s hilarious watching the kids as the try to gently hold a water balloon between their bodies without breaking it while racing to the finish line. It’s also a lot of good wet fun for the kids.
Style: Competitive
Type: Water Balloon Games
What You’ll Need:

• Water balloons (small thin balloons, not regular balloons) and a place to fill them up.
• Two containers to hold the filled water balloons. Make sure the container don’t have any sharp edges.
• If you want each team to have their own color balloons try Water Splashers Water Bombs Team Tubes Balloons. These high quality balloons come in two different colors which is great for playing team games. They also include two nozzles each with a very handy and easy to use shut-off valve. These are great for the end of a garden hose to kill the water while you tie off the balloons.

How to play:

1. Divide the kids into two teams and have each kid pair up with someone from their team.
2. Have the first pair of kids from each team stand back to back with their arms locked at the start line. Place a water balloon between their backs
3. On the word “Go!,” they must transport the balloon between their backs to the finish line (about 20 feet away). Then they have to maneuver themselves so they can deposit the balloon into the empty bucket.
4. If any pair breaks their balloon before they deposit in their teams bucket then they sit out and the next pair goes.
5. The game continues like this until each pair has had a turn.
6. The team with the most unbroken balloons in their bucket wins.

Water Balloon “Cold Potato”

This is the outdoor summertime version of that old favorite kids game, “Hot Potato”.
Style: Competitive
Type: Water Balloon Games
What You’ll Need:

• Water balloons (small thin balloons, not regular balloons) and a place to fill them up
• A container to hold the filled water balloons

How to play:

1. Bring a good supply of water balloons to the play area.
2. Have the kids sit in a circle (adjust the spacing according the age of the players) and pass the balloon from kid to kid. But here’s the catch — the balloon isn’t pass around the circle as in the traditional “hot potato”. It’s tossed across the circle.
3. If a player fails to catch the balloon, or it breaks that they’re out.
4. So the game doesn’t get out of hand, any player who intentionally tries to make a balloon explode in another player’s hand by throwing it hard instead of tossing is called out.
5. The last kid left in the game (even if soaked) is the winner.

Variations:

• If a balloon breaks, everyone who gets wet is out

Water Balloon “Drip”

Don’t be a Drip — Cool off in the fun summertime game that really isn’t about winning or losing. It’s how much fun you have cooling off!
Style: Non-competitive
Type: Water Balloon Games
What You’ll Need:

• Balloons (regular balloons — not thin small water balloons) and a place to fill them up (fill the balloons as you need them)
• A safety pin

How to play:

1. Before you inflate a balloon, poke a small hole in it using a safety pin.
2. Then fill it with water and tie the end to create a “time bomb” with a slow leak.
3. Players sit (or stand) in a circle and pass the balloon around the circle.
4. When the balloon runs out of water start another one going around the circle.
5. You can even have several balloons going around at one time.

Jump rope water splash
What you need: You need a jump rope, plastic cups, and water.
How to play: Give each child a cup filled with water. Designate two people to swing the jump rope.
The rules: One at a time, players attempt to jump the rope three times while holding their cup of water, trying not to let any water spill.
How to win: The player with the most water left in her cup is the winner.
What else you need to know: You can keep playing this game until only one player has water left in her cup.

Leg 5 Amazing Race

We met at the movies to see Megamind – free summer movie and free parking IF you take your parking ticket to get validated. Gratefully everyone did – but me. Sniff, sniff. I was NOT running back with seven children – that was worth $5.

After the movie we went to the beach for some games.

If you look close you can see the airplane in the clouds.

Next was a detour Search or Draw – the kids had to either draw a person in the sand or find objects to create a person. They did a great job!

The next was a set of four games to earn points for their team. Our groups did the foot race but got side tracked when we pulled out the pudding – we never thought to go back to them.

Who is seeing stars. It was supposed to be Who is not afraid of worms and then have gummy worms in the pudding. It was fun and funny anyway.

After the kids rinsed off and played in the water for a bit we did Who is a good sport? This would have been funnier if the kids were not swimming but the weather was beautiful – it would have been sad not to play in the water. This game involves dumping water on someone’s head.

The last two clues we did not get to but I think up or down would have been a lot of fun – building an elaborate sandcastle or burying a teammate and decorating the sand ie, mermaid or sea turtle. Good listener is leading a teammate through a marked course.

Leg 4 - Amazing Race

To start leg 4 we went to a local martial arts place for a demo. The kids had a blast learning some basic moves.

 

After karate we went to another local historical site – Mala Compra. Here we created a crossword http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/CrissCrossSetupForm.asp using information from the historical signs. We also created another puzzle that I will also attach.

Leg 3 - Amazing Race

Leg 3 again was to a historical park found here in the county. Princess Place Preserve http://www.flaglercounty.org/facilities.aspx?page=detail&RID=18

To begin the day, the children had to put together a puzzle. The first puzzle piece was inside of a balloon – the other four pieces were attached to different shapes hidden around the park – each team collected one color. Once they put the puzzle together, they were told to make a human pyramid for their next clue.

We took pictures of the pyramids and then handed them the clue – Light or Dark – eat a marshmallow off a string without any hands either with their eyes open or closed. This wasn’t terribly challenging but it did provide for a bit of entertainment to those watching.

Next was a photo scavenger hunt. Each team had a list of items and an adult with a camera. The goal was for the teams to get creative and take some cute pictures with the items on the list so we would have some fun memories.

Once they completed that part – except for the lady bug – no one could find a lady bug. There were 50,000 gnats but no lady bugs. Next was a word puzzle where they had to cross out letters to find the hidden word. https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B2g_3IEt9IyPMTNlNDQ1Y2QtODViYy00ODNlLThkODItZTk5MmE2YzJmOWY3&hl=en_US the younger kids got the one spelled out and the older kids had to unscramble the word.

The word was relay – a water balloon relay! The teams had to line up and pass the balloon over one person’s head, under the next person’s legs, until the reached the end. The last person was to sit on the balloon, run to the front and begin the next rotation. When they all completed the relay we let them have a water balloon fight with the remaining balloons. This was truly the highlight of the event!

Leg 2 - Amazing Race

To start the next leg – we led the children to Domino’s in a strip mall. Once there they found the clue box which led them to the Latino Market where the owner would teach them to sing Happy Birthday in Spanish. It was awesome!! The owner was super accomodating and the kids had a blast. Once they sang it to the owner’s liking, he gave them the next clue.

The second clue had three parts:
count the number of signs that say “Ace” when standing outside the store
count the number of PO boxes in a shipping store

add those numbers to the total of each size of Domino’s pizza.

The older group had find the radius of the four sizes of pizza and the younger kids the diameter.
If there total was correct (or in this case close to correct) the manager would give them their next clue.
One note – we got permission from each of the store owners ahead of time. If any sounded leary we just offered for one team member to go in and ONLY ONE team was allowed in the store at one time. That way only one child would be in their establishment at one time.
This clue led them to a local park where each member had to complete an obstacle course.

Leg 1 - Amazing Race

For the first leg we went to Fort Matanzas. http://www.nps.gov/foma/index.htm

It is a national monument and already has a scavenger hunt you can get online or the Junior Ranger Program which can be picked up at the park. I will post the clues we used once my husband teaches me how to put them on our server.
So the children got to choose between a Short Game or the Long Name – the printable scavenger hunt http://www.nps.gov/foma/forteachers/upload/Scavenger.pdf or the Junior Ranger Program.
After the task, the children that chose Long Name were sworn in as a Jr. Ranger and given a badge and their next clue.

The next clue was a roadblock – the whole team had to run a lap around the park and then choose who was hungry after a jog. It was hilarious – here they thought they would have a delightful feast – instead they had to choke down baby food – vegetables only!!! Some of the kids had a really hard time and others simply would NOT do it!
